J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion

Date:
Sat, 04/05/2019 - 2:00pm

St Matthew Passion is a sacred oratorio composed in 1727 by Johann Sebastian Bach. This deeply moving work is both sorrowful and powerful. Musical Director Meryl Jackson-Kew will conduct the Illawarra Choral Society with four guest soloists and organ accompanist.
The work begins with a dramatic chorus consisting of a double choir with a soprano ripieno soaring over the top. With gripping drama, it retells the story of the crucifixion. It ends with the sublime chorus, “In tears of grief.”

Music on Music

Date:
Sat, 30/03/2019 - 7:30pm - 9:30pm

When music holds a mirror up to itself, new resonances are revealed. From the purity of Josquin, Byrd and Palestrina to the humanity of Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb and the sheer delight of Bach’s motet Singet dem Herrn, this program of music about music takes us deep inside the mysterious beauty of melody, harmony and the human voice.

Palestrina starts from first principles with his Mass based on the scale ‘Ut re mi fa so la’; Elliott Gyger takes us back a step earlier with his setting of Ut queant laxis, the poem which gave us those note names.
