The Seasons - Joseph Haydn

Date:
Sun, 01/07/2018 - 3:00pm - 5:00pm

Phoenix Choir presents Joseph Hadyn's final oratorio, a masterwork of creative story-telling through music. With its refined classical elegance and quotes from the Surprise Symphony, The Seasons is unmistakably Haydn at his best. The delightfully intricate writing foreshadows the language of Romanticism to illuminate the polite pastoral landscape of James Thomson’s original poem.

The oratorio is a 19th century metaphor for spiritual renewal – it tells the story of the seasons through our industrious work rewarded by God’s bounteous gifts. Haydn paints pictures of sunrise and scorched earth in summer, and rewards us with a drinking song in Autumn. In winter we are still hard at work knitting and weaving before we face our reckoning in the final chorus and then the glorious morn, an awakening to new life.
Led by musical director Rowen Fox, Phoenix Choir will perform the oratorio in an arrangement by Alexander von Zemlinsky for four handed piano.

An associate of Schoenberg and a fine composer in his own right, Zemlinsky captures both the complexity and the drama of the orchestration with two expert pianists, Janette Norcott and Margo Adelson at the grand piano, a wonderful counterpoint to choir and soloists. We are joined by soloists Julie Paik, David Hamilton and Lewis Barber who are all well known to Blue Mountains audiences.
