Pacific Pride Choir

The Pacific Pride Choir
Performance tour
Following the great success of the 2014 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir tour to Finland, Estonia and Latvia, LGBTQI singers are invited to break new ground once again in Europe. We’ve formed the Pacific Pride Choir to take our music and our message to places where it is rarely heard, if at all.
After rehearsing together in Berlin, we will travel to Poland with concerts in and around Krakow and Warsaw in July (10-21) next year. We will sing songs of acceptance and inclusion, we will nurture and amplify the sounds of local LGBTQI singers/networks, and we’ll shine lights in corners where history repeats itself when left in the dark.
Founded by Sarah & Melanie Penicka-Smith, the Pacific Pride Choir (PPC) is an occasional touring choir open to any member of the LGBTQI community and to our straight friends. Experience singing in a choir is preferable but not essential and non-singers are very welcome as well. While most of the singers will be from Australia we are also welcoming registrations from New Zealand, Asia and Europe.

As Sarah says, 'We created PPC to contribute to the visibility and acceptance of LGBTQI people in countries where homosexuality is legalised, but not fully recognised. We travel to areas without their own queer choir, and/or where LGBTQI people are still working towards acceptance and we collaborate with local organisations and people to create visibility, solidarity, and recognition.
During our tour to Helsinki, Tallinn and Latvia, we were overwhelmed by the response to our time in countries unused to seeing out gay and lesbian people. The fragile LGBTQI advocacy groups we met told us gaining any kind of media attention was a struggle, but SGLC’s tour received the media’s attention, letting the words ‘gay and lesbian’ appear on national TV. Local queer folk told us how they felt less alone seeing the choir, how they wished they could have their own choir, and how we were needed in other parts of Europe. We believe that touring the Pacific Pride Choir every two years is a small step to meeting that need.
