A brand new choir, starting in July 2011, one of a number of choirs under the SingUp! umbrella.
SingUp! choirs are for people who just love to sing. The repertoire includes lots of pop from the 60s up to the present (including Crowded House, The Beatles, Queen, Mika, Coldplay, Elvis, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, Tom Jones, The Kinks, Leonard Cohen and many, many others) as well as Gospel and African songs, all sung acappella (no accompaniment - the voices do all the work and have all the fun!). Choir members have online access to mp3 recordings of their parts so they can practice them at home, on their walk, or in the car.
There are regular concerts with other choirs, including massed choir experiences, always raising money for a good cause. Each year SingUp! choirs raise over $10,000 for various charities.
Director Janet Andrews was the organiser of ‘Illawarra Sings’ in 2011. She is well known in the area, having taught at Wollongong Conservatorium for 26 years. She was an original member of the legendary acappella group ‘Voices From The Vacant Lot’, and sang with them for over 25 years.
The choir meets on Tuesday nights at 7.00pm in school terms
Fees are $160 per school term (10 weeks).
SingUp! choirs are under the overall direction of Stuart Davis, who has been a professional choir director and arranger since 1990. Stuart was featured on an ABCTV programme ‘Choral Crusader’. He started the Sydney Acappella Association, and was the creator/director of The Choral Sea concerts (700 voice multicultural massed choir concerts in Sydney Town Hall’). He currently directs 6 choirs including Woolooware High School. Stuart was guest conductor at the NSW Combined High School Concert, is teaching a course in Choir Leadership for Sydney University, and running choir workshops at Festivals in Peats Ridge NSW and Denmark WA.
