Not Quite Christmas

Sat, 28/11/2009 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm

Something special is happening in Petersham on November 28. One of Sydneys best-known choirs, The Cleftomaniacs is presenting an evening of a cappella music. Whats a cappella? The unaccompanied human voice singing in delicious harmony. Think Manhattan Transfer. Think Take 6.
The Cleffies are proud of their broad-ranging repertoire, they are not afraid to tackle daunting classical polyphony one minute, then throw their energy into a pop groove the next. They know it's not quite Christmas, but they decided they could get away with including a few carols as well!

Keen to encourage and promote community singing, The Cleftomaniacs conceived and presented last years sellout Sydney A Cappella Festival at the Seymour Centre.
An eclectic bunch from all over Sydney, they rehearse each Thursday night in Waterloo, with their Musical Director Gary Smith guiding them through a diverse repertoire ranging from a quick and gay Ding Dong, Merrily on High to the haunting Lifeline, arranged specifically for them.

Gary also leads one of the two guest choirs, Note Tonight Josephine, also an inner city choir, they get together every Wednesday in Glebe. Their credo? We really just enjoy singing. On the bill with NTJ is The Randwick Proms Choir based in, you guessed it, Randwick. With an impressive list of credits, including winning the open choral section at the Sydney Eisteddfod Choralfest this year and an appearance at the opening of APEC in 07, theyre planning a few contemporary numbers for their set. Many are past and present singing students of their Musical Director, Dallas Watts, no stranger to the Opera Australia stage himself.

The Cleftomaniacs Not Quite Christmas show is definitely one for the diary.
